Conscious Sedation

What is conscious sedation with nitrous oxide

Conscious sedation consists of a method performed with a specific device that releases nitrous oxide (N2O2) and oxygen (O2). For a long time, N2O2 was the main means of sedation in dental medicine. For many years it has been used very frequently in several countries (USA, England, Finland, Canada, Brazil, Iceland, etc.). It is a very safe process in which the patient receives 50-70% O2 (the air we breathe is only about 21% oxygen) and a percentage of N2O2 of 30-50%. N2O2 is a colorless gas with a mildly sweet odor and flavor. It is not flammable, irritating or toxic. The gas is administered together with oxygen through a nasal mask, and a breath through the nose is essential for the gas to have its effect. The combination of the gases causes a mild and stable sedation of the patient, but does not let him sleep.

Advantages of Conscious Sedation

It reassures the patient quickly and safely, making him relaxed; It reduced the sensitivity to pain during the procedure and caused a greater tolerance of the patient for long procedures. However, this method does not dispense the use of local anesthetic during dental care; Promotes rapid onset and recovery, allowing the patient to return to normal activities quickly; It does not cause any problems for cardiac and / or hypertensive patients, it decreases heart rate and blood pressure; Very safe with minimal risk to patient’s health and life.

Signs and symptoms of sedation
